Sly Stone, Visionary Band Leader of Sly and the Family Stone, Dies at 82

Sly Stone, the influential musician whose genre-defying work with Sly and the Family Stone helped shape the course of American music in the late 20th century, has died. He was 82.

Stone passed away peacefully after a prolonged battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other health issues, his family announced Monday. He was surrounded by his three children, his closest friend, and members of his extended family.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved dad, Sly Stone of Sly and the Family Stone,” the family said in a statement. “While we mourn his absence, we take solace in knowing that his extraordinary musical legacy will continue to resonate and inspire for generations to come.”

Born Sylvester Stewart in Texas and raised in Northern California, Stone formed Sly and the Family Stone in the 1960s. The band became one of the most prominent forces in music, blending elements of funk, rock, soul, and psychedelia with messages of unity and social consciousness. Hits like “Everyday People,” “Dance to the Music,” and “Family Affair” became anthems of the era.

“Sly was a monumental figure, a groundbreaking innovator, and a true pioneer who redefined the landscape of pop, funk, and rock music,” the family said. “His iconic songs have left an indelible mark on the world, and his influence remains undeniable.”

In recent years, Stone had re-emerged from long periods out of the spotlight. His memoir, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), was published in 2024. His family stated that he had recently completed a screenplay based on his life, which they plan to release in the future.

“We extend our deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and prayers during this difficult time,” the family said. “We wish peace and harmony to all who were touched by Sly’s life and his iconic music.”

Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
