The parents of rapper Takeoff are in a legal dispute over how to divide proceeds from a wrongful death settlement tied to his 2022 killing in Houston, according to court filings reported by multiple outlets.
Takeoff, born Kirshnik Khari Ball, was fatally shot on Nov. 1, 2022, outside a bowling and billiards venue in Houston. His mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging negligence by the business. The case was later resolved through a confidential settlement, with terms not made public.
Court records indicate that Takeoff’s mother, Titania Davenport, and his father, Kenneth Ball, disagree on how the settlement funds should be allocated.
Davenport is seeking a larger share of the settlement, arguing in filings that she served as the primary caregiver and provided most of his support during his upbringing. She also contends she maintained a central role in his personal and financial affairs after his music career began.
Ball is seeking an equal distribution of the settlement proceeds. He has also challenged procedural questions in the case, including where the dispute should be heard. Court filings show competing arguments over jurisdiction between Texas, where the death occurred, and Georgia, where probate matters are being handled.
Takeoff died without a publicly known will, leaving estate issues to be resolved through probate proceedings. That has led to overlapping legal actions involving both states.
The court has not issued a ruling on how the settlement will be divided or which jurisdiction will oversee the dispute. The case remains active.
