Abigail Fisher has successfully won the title of Becky With the Bad Grades and she’s proven to University of Texas why she never deserves to attend the university.
Remember those horrifying high school days where all you wanted to do was hurry up and get that high school diploma? Well, some of you probably enjoyed school, but others were ready for it to be over. So you did the best you could to pass, but not the best you could do. Or maybe you just weren’t that smart, but you still managed to make it out of high school. Just like you were ready to get it over with, so was Abigail Fisher. In 2008 she graduated high school and prepared to go to her dream university, University of Texas in Austin. However, she never considered the possibility that her grades and extra curricular activities weren’t good enough to get her in.
What Fisher didn’t consider, UT did. They rejected her because she wasn’t good enough for their school. They had people with better applications. This was in 2008. Smarter people would have just happily applied to other universities, but not Abigail. While she did eventually receive a degree from Louisiana State University (LSU), she’s been trying to win a case against UT since 2009.
The case involved getting rid of affirmative action because Abigail and her lawyers felt that affirmative action played a role in her not getting accepted. Since 2009 Abigail has used every excuse she could think of to keep the case going. At one point she even stated that her job choices weren’t as good because she didn’t attend UT. The case made it all the way to the Supreme Court, where they lost. However, in 2015 she and her lawyers decided to try the Supreme Court again and this week the once again lost the case. Many people are focusing on the fact that Abigail wasn’t convincing enough in 2008 to get into her dream university. Honestly, she could have attended LSU for some time, transferred, or even went to UT for a graduate degree. After suing her dream university, she has no chance of ever getting a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD from there anyway. That was just dumb.
Abigail lost in court, but on Twitter she’s won the title of Becky With the Bad Grades. Last year Twitter created the hashtag #StayMadAbby, but because she kept pushing the case she received an upgrade to #Beckywiththebadgrades. The hashtag doesn’t just involve black people making fun of it. There are people of all races, including other whites that thought her case was dumb.
