A&R Report: Flexx Kapone

It’s so important to make sure the people who are representing your brand and music not only know what they’re doing, but also the right way to go about things. Respect and patience will get you far.

When did you start performing?
First time I ever performed was in a talent show when I was 6 years old.
I remember it like it was yesterday and I was real nervous. It was Bobby
Brown’s “Every Little Step” and I remember being down on myself because
I got up there and forgot some of the words. After I got off stage a girl came
up to me and told me I did great and I remember the nostalgia from that whole experience. I knew from that moment that being on stage was something I wanted to do and I never looked back since than.

Name some artists who have inspired or influenced you.
There are many artists who have influenced me but some of the biggest
influences are Nas, 2Pac, Rakim, KRS One, Playa Fly, Biggie, Big L,
Project Pat and those are just a few of many. Growing up I listened to
artists from all over the map and the things that I admired the most about
these artists, were their skills on the mic and how real they kept it in their
music. These artists were relatable and told it like it is for better or worse.
When I went through tough times in my life, I could listen to these artists
music and it would help me get through it.

How would you describe your style?
I’ve found a formula that works for me in fusing the old school hip hop
sound of the 80’s & 90’s with the new school 808’s and the new sound
of this era in general. To simplify it, I would say it’s soulful and it’s real
because I keep it honest with my audience. My flaws, my shortcomings
and my pain is all in my music and never hold back so when you hear my
music you’re not getting a gimmick, you’re getting insight to who I really am as a man in my everyday life.

What separates you from other artists?
I feel like my versatility and consciousness in my music separates me
from a lot of artists. I feel like with rap in general, there have been a lot
of artists who put on an image instead of being real with the fans about
who they are. A lot of rappers talk about drug use and never use drugs and
some talk about the trap but have never stepped foot in any trap. In my
music I am rapping about real life experiences and things I’ve really done.
I think authenticity is missing in music and society as a whole.

Name major artists you’ve performed with.
I have a single called “Welcome 2 The Dirty” with FG & the
Memphis legend, Project Pat. Big shout out to Pat and FG,
the single has gotten me radio spins from all over the world.

Do you have any major offers on the table?
There are many opportunities that I have gotten over the years
and many relationships I have developed through radio spins, radio
interviews and magazine placements so a lot of major people in the
industry have followed, reached out or supported me over the years.
Right now there are no major offers but I’ve definitely gotten the
attention of many with my music.

What advice would you offer other aspiring artists?
I would tell other artists to stay consistent and never let up even when
things aren’t going the way you want them to. Nothing worth having comes
easy, so you have to make sure you put in the work and stay humble once you start to accomplish things. Appreciate what you have but grind hard like you have nothing and work extremely hard as if something to prove.
