Jenni W is not only a great singer, but she has an extraordinary gift in how she put her words together. Calling her a songwriter is an understatement. Get familiar.
When did you start performing?
I got my start performing when I was 17 years old. Before I became a pop artist, I was trained in Opera style singing. I took vocal lessons at a music school for around 4 years. We would have various concerts throughout the year which I would take part in.
Name some of the artists who have inspired or influenced you?
I have 3 artists who really have really sculpted me into who I am today. The first is Eric Bellinger. His music has the most memorable melodies. If I’m ever feeling stuck while writing I’ll play some songs and immediately find inspiration in myself. The second artist who I admire is Kehlani. She’s such a powerful woman. I love the way she paints pictures with lyrics and speaks about real life issues that most artists don’t talk about. She’s not afraid to be herself. I also admire Julia Michaels. I’ve been a fan of her songwriting since 2014. In all honesty, I have been waiting since then for her to become an artist herself. My favorite thing about her music is her honesty and ability to tell the story in the most truthful way. She isn’t afraid to call herself out for her negative actions.
How would you describe your style?
My style is mostly pop. While writing a song I try to not force anything and be as straightforward as I possibly can. I want the beat alone to set the mood and give off the vibe for the song.
What separates you from other artists?
I think what separates me from other artists is the fact that I am so unapologetically myself. I’m kind of just unique for the simple fact that I’m just “me.” Everyone has a different story, and everyone has a different way of telling their story. I like to write my own songs because no one can tell my story the way that I can. I love co-writing as well. I love just sitting down and talking to someone about life and what we’ve been through and then creating music from it. It’s one of the most magical feelings ever.
Name some of the major artists you have performed with?
I have yet to perform with any “major” artists, however, that is one of my biggest goals this year! I’m so beyond excited to see what 2018 has to offer!
Do you have any major offers on the table?
At this moment I am an independent artist. I’m just taking things one day at a time and cherishing my freedom. I’m so lucky and blessed that I’m even able to come out with my own music. If someone “major” comes out of it that would be amazing, but right now I’m just going with the flow.
What advice would you offer other aspiring artists?
I would tell them to not be afraid of rejection and to just be themselves. Don’t try to force anything and focus on the positive people who believe in you. Sometimes we tend to let toxic people define us. Just surround yourself with those who believe in your vision and goals!
