For one night, the world of “Friday” moved beyond the screen and into a live celebration as thousands of fans gathered for the debut of Everyday’s Friday — Lyrics, Loungin’ and Laughing at the Long Beach Amphitheater.
Created by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh, the “Friday” film franchise has remained a staple of popular culture for more than three decades. The inaugural event, hosted by Ice Cube and Mike Epps, transformed the venue into an immersive experience inspired by the films, giving longtime fans and newcomers the opportunity to celebrate the franchise together.
The amphitheater grounds recreated elements of the “Friday” universe with candy-painted lowriders, photo opportunities featuring scenes from the films, exclusive merchandise, and themed food. Fans also watched entries from the franchise at an on-site drive-in theater, blending nostalgia with an interactive festival atmosphere.
Mike Epps, who joined the franchise in later installments, led a stage program featuring cast members Paula Jai Parker, Kathleen Bradley, Kym Whitley, Clifton Powell, and Ron Muhammad. The performers shared behind-the-scenes stories and reflected on the films’ enduring popularity and cultural influence.
The event also included a tribute honoring cast members who have died, recognizing the actors whose performances helped establish “Friday” as one of the most recognizable comedy franchises of its era.
Fans embraced the occasion by arriving dressed as memorable characters from the films, including Mrs. Parker, Joker Boy, and Big Worm. The costume contest highlighted the franchise’s lasting connection with audiences, many of whom have continued quoting and celebrating the films since the original debuted in 1995.
Musical performances carried the celebration into the evening. Scarface and Warren G performed fan favorites before Ice Cube closed the event alongside WC. Cube’s set spanned his career, featuring songs from N.W.A, his solo catalog, Westside Connection, and music associated with the “Friday” films.
More than a retrospective, Everyday’s Friday — Lyrics, Loungin’ and Laughing offered fans the opportunity to experience the neighborhood, characters, and atmosphere that made the films enduring favorites.
If the enthusiastic turnout in Long Beach is any indication, organizers may have found a new way to celebrate one of hip-hop and Hollywood’s most influential comedy franchises.
