Interview: Björgvin Arnarson of SYFY’s Chucky Series

Björgvin Arnarson discovered his love for acting after his first role on Bounce TV’s Family Time. Arnarson portrays Devon Evans in the new season of Chucky on SYFY, which debuted on October 5.

Tell us about the latest season of “Chucky.”
It starts off with our characters with them in a weird limbo state because they do not know if Chucky is dead or not. Devon likes to think he is dead, truly all of them think that. They all have that thought in their wondering if he is truly dead or not. He is not and he ruins their lives and sends them to a new school and environment.

How do you feel about returning to your role as “Devon”?
During the breaking between the seasons, I have not done much work. It feels good to work again and I like Devon’s character, he is fun to play a cool guy. In this season he is a bit angrier, and I believe I am good at portraying that aspect of him.

Do you enjoy true crime or unsolved mysteries as much as your character?
Maybe not as much to have my own podcast but I do really like the stories. I watch a lot of like true crime more a sense of things that happened that are interesting and go in depth and have big plot twist in them. It is intriguing how these stories come about.

How does “Devon” deviate from any roles you have portrayed?
Devon is one of the roles that I have really gotten to play that has a character arc. The other ones are fairly small and one dimensional. I like how Devon can play around a bit and build his own character. That is how he differs a lot from the other characters because I work with him throughout an extended period which is fun to do.

What are some of the underlying messages in “Chucky”?
A theme that I have noticed after Don explained it is family, Jake starts off with having a family, but they do not really respect him and towards the end of it his family becomes Lexi and Devon. The theme is used a lot in season two especially. Even in Child’s Play 2, it is a reoccurring theme in the franchise.

How is it working with the cast?
Its great being able to work with everyone again, when I first went into it, I was nervous to meet all these new people, but I became friends with them, and it was easier to work with them on a personal level. It feels great to get back to it and continue the fun.

What is the experience like working with Don Macini?
I never gotten to work with a director or creator for a long time. It is cool to see his process and he truly does care about Chucky. If something is wrong or doesn’t fit, he fixes the problem, I like that he is always trying to collaborate with others. His inclusive approach makes it feel like it is a group project more so than his project.

Do you feel that Chucky is truly the continuation of the movies?
The show does a wonderful job in bringing a new audience but also bringing in the audience that adores the original movies. It does blend well with blending in the original cast. It is cool to see the continuation of the franchise because it has been building up for a long time.

Who has played a meaningful role in getting to where you are now?
My parents always encouraged me to keep at it even if I was like no I am doing other stuff. They always reminded me stay focus in my career and to work on my acting, now I am like thanks mom and dad.

What is your next goal in your career and how are you going to achieve it?
The goal I have for the future is to be on the production side of film making. My dream is to make my own projects someday. I want to go to film school, I am in the small steps of accomplishing that goal .I know it’s going to be a long-term goal but I am prepared to put in the hard work to see myself flourish.
