Talented, motivated and ambitious international makeup artist Andrea D. Charles fell in love with all things from makeup and experimenting with colors.

Makeup has always been a part of her life. Beauty is about being positive; this statement has become the mantra and the power behind her success. Andrea has the kind of natural ability to make her clients not only look beautiful but to feel beautiful. It has made her a favorite among entertainment personalities including Cathleen Trigg-Jones , Gabriel Union, Tyra Banks , Tanika Ray and Demi Moore and being a dedicated advocate to women of domestic violence and human trafficking.

“The things that makes us different are the things that makes us beautiful.”

What does Beauty mean to you?

Beauty to me, means to be comfortable in your own skin.  Beauty is within each and every one. Beauty is about appreciating every characteristic about you. Beauty is about being positive.

You have an incredible career, what have been your highlights?

I am appreciative of all my accomplishments and for those who have made my career possible.  My career has had many ups and downs. Some highlights include my appearance at NYU where I had an open discussion on the topic of human trafficking. In addition, I have coordinated and hosted various charity events and workshops to help build confidence and encourage for young women who are survivors of domestic violence, and human trafficking so that they can make a difference within their communities.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

To me, there isn’t one specific source of inspiration. I get inspired by life. Even the smallest child can teach you something. I believe life is a learning process and through this process I get inspired to create.

How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start in the industry?

I have been a makeup artist for over 15 years now. To me makeup has always been a part of my life. I love experimenting with color.  I was first introduced to the makeup industry through my friend. Her husband was a producer and she told him ‘hey I have this great makeup artist for you, she’s new but very talented’ and he took a chance and I got my first job.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career?

My biggest challenge as a make-up artist besides trying to get my foot in the door was to build a team of like-minded artists that would result in the growth of Andrea D. Charles studio.

What do you love most about makeup?

Makeup is majestic. There are many individuals who frown upon the use of makeup but to me makeup is a creative outlet. Makeup allows me to be creative and display my talents. To me doing someone’s makeup is soothing, whether it’s the strokes of the brushes or the application of lipstick. Makeup boosts confidence and enhances natural beauty.

Does everyone look better with makeup?

But I believe everyone is beautiful and makeup enhances what you already possess.

How would you describe your signature look and what is about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?

My signature look is “Black & Bold”. You will always find shades of black in my wardrobe and on set. What sets me apart from other make-up artists is my unconventional methods of balancing simplicity and boldness, I use make-up as a Superpower.

What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?

From one woman to another, beauty lies within us all. Use the power of make-up to enhance what is already within. Just highlight things a little, with the most important highlighter of them all- “You”.

What is one of your best quotes?

My favorite quote is “ Mistakes can be amazing “

I see that you have a non profit organization , can you tell us about it?

City Girl Beauty Project is a non-profit organization which focuses on helping survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking ages 18-30.  It is a 501(C)3 based here in New York City.  It was founded by me in 2011. CGBP provides a platform for women to share their stories all while building confidence and helping their community.

How many women have your organization helped?

I believe their organization helps women everyday whether it’s our post on Instagram or the events held.

What is the most successful program your organization has and why?

Our organization’s core and most successful program is our Heroic Beauty Workshop. This workshop combines beauty, self-empowerment and personal development skills which also gives each individual an open platform to share their stories, and experiences within the workshop environment while learning new skills and allowing them to regain confidence, enabling them to become changemakers within their communities.

What are your organizations this year? Are you planning any workshops?

Currently we are planning to have a Heroic Beauty Workshop in Fall 2020. We are now sourcing workshop candidates, collaborations and supporters. For more details please visit the website (www.citygirlbeautyproject.org) you will see all the information concerning it.

Can you share two stories of individuals whose lives have been changed because of your organization?

Andrea: During one of our events in 2014, a young lady let’s call her Emma at the age of 24 decided to take her life into her own hands and change it for good. She was an abusive relationship which caused her physical harm and dire emotional trauma. As a result of the support from CGBP’s community Emma took the brave step leaving her abuser behind while moving forward and helping other women in similar situations.

Another story that stands with me currently is the story of a 27-year-old lady we can call Judy, who contacted the organization seeking support. Her own mother was a victim of sexual assault which inspired her to get involved with CGBP.

Share something with the world that you would like for them to know.

This could happen to anyone. Look out for your community and fellow citizens.

If anyone wanted to get to know the organization better, what are the best ways to learn more ?

To learn more CGBP supporters and those who want to be involved should visit our website https://www.citygirlbeautyproject.org/ and follow us on social media via our Instagram and Facebook page which allows you to see firsthand the impact the organization has on the lives of many including yourself. You can also volunteer with us and be part of the change.
