Liberty Beats Mercury, Stewart Makes History

in a game of runs, the New York Liberty closed out their matchup against the Phoenix Mercury with a 89-71 victory at Barclays Center. Liberty star, Breanna Stewart, nearly posted her first triple-double, finishing with 28 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 assists. Her performance was much-needed in the absence of Sabrina Ionesco, who missed her second consecutive game with a hamstring injury. Speaking of injuries, Phoenix was dealt with a couple of blows well before tip-off, as Brittney Griner (hip) and Diana Taurasi (hamstring) also sat out with injuries.

Liberty led by as much as 19 at the start of the fourth quarter, and it appeared the game was already over. However, Phoenix went on another late 11-0 run, cutting it to 72-64. With four minutes remaining, however, New York’s Johannès would knock down consecutive threes, making it an 82-67 Liberty lead. Jonquil Jones would also go on a 5-0 run, sealing the game for New York. Jones recorded her first double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
