Netflix Releases Trailer for ‘A Different World’ Sequel, Returning to Hillman College

Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming sequel to the beloved sitcom “A Different World,” bringing viewers back to Hillman College with a new generation of students and several familiar faces.

The series, which premieres Sept. 24, centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, as she begins her freshman year at the fictional historically Black college attended by her parents, Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy reprise their roles as Dwayne and Whitley.

The trailer introduces Deborah and her new classmates as they navigate college life, relationships, and the expectations that come with attending the same school that shaped their parents.

The new students include Alijah Kai as Rashida Duvall, a first-generation criminal justice major; Cornell Young IV as five-star athlete Shaquille Johnson; Jordan Aaron Hall as psychology major Amir Rodale; Kennedi Reece as Hazel Henry; and Chibuikem Uche as Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur Kojo Achebe. Netflix describes the series as a hopeful dramedy focused on the rituals, humor, and nuances of life at a historically Black college.

The sequel also brings back several members of the original cast, including Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks and Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson. Charnele Brown and Jada Pinkett Smith are also returning in their original roles. Debbie Allen, who played an important role in the original series, returns as an executive producer and directed the first episode. Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood, who wrote for the original series, are among the executive producers.

The original “A Different World,” a spinoff of “The Cosby Show,” ran for six seasons on NBC from 1987 to 1993. It initially followed Denise Huxtable, played by Lisa Bonet, at Hillman before developing into an ensemble centered on characters including Dwayne, Whitley, and Freddie. The series became particularly known for its depiction of Black college life and its willingness to address social and political issues.

The sequel arrives as the original series enjoys a renewed audience on Netflix. The original “A Different World” began streaming on the service in February 2025, introducing the sitcom to viewers who did not grow up with it.

The new series is created and led by showrunner Felicia Pride. Its first season will consist of 10 half-hour, single-camera episodes. Netflix has said the Sept. 24 premiere date is exactly 39 years after the original series debuted on NBC.

For longtime viewers, the return to Hillman offers a bridge between the sitcom’s original era and a new generation of students. For Netflix, the series provides an opportunity to revisit a recognizable television world while telling a new story through Deborah and her classmates.

“A Different World” premieres Sept. 24 on Netflix.
