Serena Williams Announces Retirement!

The greatest of all time.

Serena Williams, who has dominated the sport of tennis, is finally stepping away from her 27-year-long professional career. In Vogue’s September issue, Serena penned a heartfelt farewell to tennis.

I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me,” Williams wrote.

I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people. Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution.

At just 14 years old, Serena Williams began her journey to greatness. Since then, she’s won 23 Grand Slam titles and four Olympic gold medals. More importantly, she earned the respect of MANY and won the hearts of THOUSANDS of fans worldwide.

Marveling at everything she’s accomplished, there’s just simply no denying the impact Williams has had as an athlete, and as a strong Black woman. Morning sports show, First Take, on ESPN, reacted to her retirement announcement this morning as well.

“It’s so empowering. Not only has she changed the entire landscape of sports, she has impacted the entire sports world in so many ways.”

Twitter also went into a frenzy as Tweets flooded the timeline after her shocking announcement. From Cari Champion, to the Wimbledon, and fans from all walks of life, expressed their feelings and thoughts to the news.
