A&R Report: D. Weathers – Heir to the Throne

D. Weathers

D. Weathers has a future. With his versatility in styles and unique approach to crafting well-thought out songs, many argue that he may be the All-American answer to a certain Canadian actor turned singer rapper recording artist [Drake].  Representing the Poughkeepsie AKA Power Kingdom,  the emerging talent shares his past, present and future.  Remember, you met him here… first.

How old are you? I am 19 going on 20 in August.

When did you start performing? I started performing seriously in the spring of ’09 with a local group called the Horsemen. Unfortunately, things fell apart between the six of us so I joined Final Score Ent along with Tito Montana and have been performing under them ever since.

Name some of the artist who have inspired or influenced you? There are a few signed and unsigned artists that have a big influence on me such as Wale, J.Cole, Vado, Tito Montana and Skip Lighty. I’ve taken bits and pieces from each artist and developed my own style. I’ve taken storyline development from J Cole, Tito, and Skip Lighty, mixed it with Wale’s word play and tied it all together with Vado’s “swag” and delivery.

How would you describe your style? I feel my style is smooth but yet aggressive; I use a lot of metaphors to convey my ideas in a way that may require my audience to think. I tend to beat around the bush, rather than being straight forward with a lot of the lines that I say. I’ve been told that it feels like I’m talking directly to the listener to the point where I’m no longer rapping but I’m talking slick or being real with the addition of a beat. Some love me for my “wickedness”; however, a lot of females just love my voice. I guess it’s safe to say that I’m the heartthrob of Final Score.

What separates you from other artists? The one thing that separates me from other artists is my versatility. The fact that I can touch on so many different situations and relate to people in a number of ways is what also sets me apart. For example, I can rap about the hardships of life and growing up in the hood, but yet still be the sweet kind-hearted gentlemen that I am. In addition, I have a way of being very unpredictable which forces my audience to wonder; while still making songs that are straightforward and to the point such as my club songs. I feel like I have the ability to mix a catchy hook and banging beat with deep lyrics that have value and meaning to them. Whereas a lot of rappers can’t or choose not to do so.

Name some of the major artists you have performed with? I recently opened up for Mario. Besides that, I have songs with a few such as, Fred the Godson and Reek Da Villain.

Do you have any major offers on the table? I have yet to speak to a major label. I’m just trying to build my buzz and make a solid situation for myself. I still need to finish up a few things and start touring to get my name out there.

What advice would you offer other aspiring artists? For the people out there trying to make this rap dream reality, only thing I really have to say is keep pushing, grinding and write, write, and write. I feel you can never go wrong writing. They should strive to avoid using beats commonly found on the net, but try to find producers with original material. Networking is key to success in life, the business is so much more than just music. Most importantly, be yourself. Pretending is not the way to go.

Any shout outs? First of all I’d like to thank god for blessing me with this talent that I know others would kill for. I’d like to thank my mother for looking out for me from the heavens above and pulling the strings she does to keep me safe. My beloved sister and friend Jenek Dancy and her Husband Desmond Dancy, Tito Montana and the whole Final Score family for letting be a part of this history in the making. My producers Zack and Leon (Thorobreads), Slimm Gemm, Drawzilla, Tim McQueen, My little and bring brothers P.H… and La-sun, My personal assistant Aquila (Binky) Johnson, Dorian (Nice) Cummings and Gee-Q. Most importantly, every supporter (Fan) thats behind me through this incredible journey and the other artists chasing there dreams like Nusku and Supa Star Torch out in harlem. Last but not least Be’n Original for letting my do this interview. Please make sure to follow me @Dweather5 and you can find some of my songs at www.soundcloud.com/Dweather5
