Editorial: Donald Trump and The G.O.P. are Responsible

Even before taking his first step into the White House, Donald Trump had a history of pouring gas on racially-charged fires.

From advocating for the death penalty of the Central Park Five to becoming the loudest voice in undermining the legitimacy of the first Black president with the birther movement, Donald Trump has always inserted himself only to make things worse.

Even in his formal announcement as a 2016 candidate, Trump portrayed immigrants coming to America across our southern border as rapists and murderers.

Donald Trump’s presidency has empowered white supremacy and hate crimes against people of color including those committed by law enforcement have increased tremendously. Local and state governments have allowed our amoral president to influence the very spirit in which law enforcement execute their duties.

A man named George Floyd is killed by a white patrol officer in Minneapolis, who relentlessly held his knee on his neck on camera for over eight minutes and it takes days for him to be charged. Several African American have died at the hands of police officers with justice nowhere to be found.

It has gotten so bad that white civilians now feel vested, taking the law into their own hands, as in the case of the killing of Ahmaud Arbery.

And the Republican party both, willfully and blindly, stands behind him.

His influence has tainted the Republican party to a degree that members of the House of Representatives and the Senate are so afraid of falling of favor with his base of racists and xenophobes, they have abandoned their duties under oath — to protect and defend American values and principles.

Donald Trump used his office as a bully pit to quell the peaceful protest of Colin Kaepernick, pressuring to NFL to silence him and others.

Well, this is what happens when peace is no longer optional.

Our streets are filled with protests, riots, and destruction. There’s an infection at the very core of our country.

Its name is Donald Trump and the Republican party is to blame.
