Editorial: Chrisette Michele, You Are Not Representing Us

If the news breaking about her performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration wasn’t bad enough, Chrisette Michele published at pathetic open letter in an attempt to explain it.

“My heart is broken for our country, for the hopes of our children, for the fights of those who came before us. I cry at the thought that Black History, American History might be in vain.

This country has had great moments. God has shined His light upon us.

Today, I hope that Great Moments begin in peaceful & progressive conversation. I am willing to be a bridge. I don’t mind “These Stones”, if they allow me to be a voice for the voiceless.

I am here. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Our lives begin to end, the day we become silent about what matters,”.

I am here, representing you, because this is what matters.”

First of all, you are not representing “us”. A vast majority of the collective “us” you are claiming to represent would prefer you withdraw.

And I don’t want to hear that Steve Harveyesque bullshit about a seat at the table, either.

From his divisive rhetoric to his cabinet choices, it’s clear that if Donald trump had a fucking table, with the exception of a questionable few, there would be no chairs for us.

You are not getting a seat at that table, but what you are doing is heeling at his feet, hoping a few crumbs fall off.

The majority of us don’t respect it, but that’s okay because this is not about us.

It’s about you.

Whether it’s the money or the need for attention from the majority as your star’s light has faded, I hope it was worth it because when it comes to your fans — you probably lost most.

You definitely lost one, word to Jay Z.

PS: SINGING AT THE INAUGURATION IS LIKE BEING BLACK WEARING BLACK-FACE.
