Interview: R&B Singer/Songwriter Keithian

Keithian is not your average male R&B singer. While his music is entertaining and relatable, there is also an honesty that is indicative that it comes from a real place. He writes and sings from his soul.

What inspired you to put out an acoustic version of your song “Ways”?
This is the original way I wrote the song and wanted the fans to hear it. It was also inspired by us going on tour and wanting to break down the production to show how we make music.

So many of today’s male R&B singers are falling off because they are basically using the same concepts or approach to songwriting. How are you carving out your own lane?
Honestly, I call my music Gumbo music and that’s because I use my own experience as the approach. I try all ways (a lot non traditional) to make my music. I look at things from the outside to find what’s within.

You were recently on tour with VEDO. Tell us about that experience.
That was such an amazing experience, Vedo and his team and everyone on the tour were amazing. It was a dream come true to jump on a tour that happened in the spring of 23’ after going through the pandemic.

In what ways has having roots in New Orleans influenced your sound?
I make Gumbo music and it’s because being from NOLA we gravitate to everything and that’s what makes our music special.

How has your music developed from your Green Clouds project to your latest body of work?
It has given me a lot of self reassurance and gained confidence as an artist. It has developed because I have gone through so much since recording it and I feel like I am light years away from Green Clouds as an artist. Tragedy has also ushered a change in my music too.

People find your music very relatable. Are you pulling from your own personal experiences?
I pull from my own experience, but most of all I pull from other people’s experiences. That’s what makes it so relatable.

You also directed and produced AT&T’s “Dream in Black” campaign. Can you expect more work on projects outside of music from you?
Yes, I am a true artist. Being able to jump into several different mediums is a blessing. I have a few more film projects that will change my life and the world we live in when they are out.

Having accomplished so much in such a short time, what’s next for you?
I have new music coming up every month till I announce another tour in the Fall. Can’t wait to reveal that.
