A&R Report: Brooklyn’s Lenaah Lee

lenaah lee

Brooklyn’s very own Lenaah Lee brings a different kind of energy to the game. With a degree in musical theatre and a strong hip hop foundation, she’s setting herself apart from the pack is light-work.

How would you describe your sound?
My sounds are jazzy mixed with Rap and R&B/ Hip Hop. I have a degree in musical theatre and have studied it for nine years. In my music I sometimes incorporate musical theatre-style singing in the way I would write a song. My lyrics are influenced by my daily life activities at my highest emotional peak, whether good or bad. I grew up on rap. My father taught me how to rap, and as I got older, I started to love R&B/ Hip Hop Music.

My jazz influences come from listening to Chaka Khan and Ella Fitzgerald in high school. Jazz touches my soul, and when mixed with rap, the sound is impressive.

What has been the most important lesson you have learned so far?
When speaking to professionals or any artist, manager, publicist, etc., who is trying to get their music into the world, or make a name for themselves in the music business, take what you need to out of the conversation and move on accordingly. You can’t dwell on things people say. Each artist has a different path.

Do you feel there is more pressure on female acts compared to their male counterparts?
I’m coming up into this industry where female artists are well respected, so I don’t feel there is more pressure. You’re either lit or you’re not. I believe in it’s either good, needs work or bad. The only thing that I see compared is music and stage presence.
